#AVERNUM 6 HEALING RESTING SERIES#
The largest complaint I see brought against this scenario is that it feels very disjointed and is simply just a series or random dungeons but honestly I really enjoyed it. There is a time limit to complete the scenario but I found it to be fairly generous and you should be okay as long as you don’t make stupid moves or just hang around any one area for too long. This is the only of the four premade missions which take place wholly within Avernum and not on the surface and really gave me a nostalgic feel of the first two Avernum’s. The scenario involves sending your group down a largely uncharted underground river in Avernum in order to get vital supplies to a besieged fort. The Za-Khazi run despite being generally considered the weakest scenario was actually a favorite of mine. The third mission is a the Za-Khazi run and is usually considered the weakest of the scenarios. It was a good ending to the scenario and had me hurrying through a encampment that normally I would of tacked in a much more methodical manner. I sided with the Empire so I can’t speak for how the rebel story plays out but in the end I ended up in the rebel camp with only a limited amount of time to navigate the enemy filled camp to assassinate the rebel leader before the imperial attack launched as a distraction is repelled. Whole cities are depopulated and burnt to the ground by the rebels and they have no problem carrying out bombings in crowded town centers or torturing captives. The rebels I suppose would be considered the “good guys” as they wish to expel imperial forces from their island but their methods are absolutely brutal to both the empire and civilians and anyone even tacitly supporting the Empire are shown no mercy. The Empire is rather oppressive in extracting resources from the locals though they do bring order to the land. I like how this scenario paints both sides with shades of gray rather then just good and evil. Your given the option of working for the Empire and infiltrating the rebels to assassinate their leader or working with the rebels whom have been using brutality to battle the empire. This adventures takes your party to a island where the Empire is attempting to put down a rebellion. The second adventure, “A small Rebellion” comes with a T for Teen rating for graphic violence probably for the descriptions of torture but it’s really not that bad. This adventure takes place across the valley itself and several towns that are suffering from general sickness and rot as well as eventually taking the party into an abandoned magic school and its underground caverns. The first included scenario sets your mercenary group in a valley that is slowly dying from some unknown source. I tried to make a balanced party of two melee fighters and two magic users though I did make one of my fighters a rebel who had some thief skills and my healer was a shaman who had some combat skills and potion making abilities. You do get to create your party of four members from scratch and import them through the various scenarios. As Blades of Avernum is set after the third Avernum game the missions take place mostly above ground in the Empire but one does take place in the underground realm of Avernum. combat is turned based using a party of four characters. Keep in mind this would really be considered an indie game as it was done by a very small independent studio, Spiderweb Software.

Individually the scenarios are only a few hours long at most but when combined the length is actually equivalent to a shorter “full length” RPG game.įor those not familiar with the earlier games, Avernum is basically an update of the Exile series from the mid 90’s and even though this game came out in 2004 is does look very dated. Even though the scenarios are all separate and unconnected when played together with the same party it really feels like a single connected game. The four included scenarios can be played in any order but are really meant to be played in order with a group being imported from one mission to the next. I am including it though as it does include four “official” premade missions which when combined sort of constitute an Avernum 3.5. Blades of Avernum isn’t so much its own game but is more like a Avernum scenario maker that allows users to create their own Avernum missions using what appears to be the same engine used for Avernum 1-3. Its been awhile since I completed an Avernum game which was Avernum 3 back in 2016.
